Check whether each operable window stays open without forcing it
A worn or broken sash balance, often a hidden spring, cord, or channel, can let a window drop, bind, or become unexpectedly heavy.
When it usually needs attention
Timing comes from the exact model manual or written service plan
The exact window instructions and observed condition control service; Domoranda supplies only a conservative estimated check until they are known.
When this guide applies
Applies to safely reachable windows intended to open; fixed glass and inaccessible or shared windows can be recorded as not applicable rather than tested.
What to do
From a dry floor, operate one safely reachable window at a time using its normal handles, raise the moving sash only a few inches, keep hands clear of the closing path, and record whether it moves evenly and stays supported without a prop; do not remove trim, stops, covers, or the sash.
Applies when: Applies to safely reachable windows intended to open; fixed glass and inaccessible or shared windows can be recorded as not applicable rather than tested.
Who should handle it: Residents may observe normal operation and keep an unsafe window closed; balance identification, sash removal, spring or cord work, glazing, egress repair, and shared-building decisions belong to the responsible owner and qualified window service.
Tools
- Phone camera for the window location and visible labels
- Flashlight used from the room side
Parts and supplies
- Removable note or painter's tape to mark a window that must remain closed
Safety gear
- Closed-toe footwear
- Keep hands out of the sash closing and pinch paths
Before you start
- Dry stable floor with no ladder or leaning outside
- Curtains, cords, furniture, children, and pets kept out of the movement path
- Emergency egress will not be blocked by the check
Power, water, or fuel shutoffs
- Disable a powered window only through its documented user control
- Keep away from wet electrical controls or wiring
Cleaner or chemical limits
Do not spray lubricant, cleaner, solvent, bleach, paint, or degreaser into tracks, balance channels, locks, weatherstripping, or an unknown finish.
Stop and get help when
- Stop immediately if the sash drops, will not stay open, feels unexpectedly heavy, binds, tilts, leaves its track, or exposes a cord, spring, sharp edge, or broken glass
- Do not hold a failing sash with one hand, place fingers beneath it, remove a sash stop, climb, lean outside, or test an upper sash that is not safely reachable
Who to call: Keep the window closed and use the responsible owner or qualified window service for balance, spring, cord, channel, sash, glazing, egress, powered-control, or water-entry repair.
